How Fiction Authors Can Benefit From Increasing their Vocabulary
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. It is best to use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing if you are a fiction writer. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. The novel should be reread after you enjoyed reading it the first time. The goal is to examine how the work was written. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
It could be their punctuation, spelling and the difference in the words that are being used. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. There are standard rules that you should stick to when writing for either the American or British readers.
Expanding the base of the vocabulary fiction authors know is important and it is possible to do. Anytime when they are reading another author’s work, they can do this. It is advisable that you note down any new vocabulary that you come across. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. It is a logical thing to do but is only one of the many strategies of how you can build your vocabulary. Another thing to do is to get a notebook or any other system that you desire, and make categories that suit your needs. Be keen when listening to people talk, or when reading and even conversations on the TV. Be mindful of verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. The words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use should be kept. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. When making the first draft use this list.
