Work Of The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. The simple words that are used to illustrate the complex work of the organization is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Today in the world, there are a thousand of animal species. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. The animals rescued by the organization have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. The organization is also presenting pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. The organization also thinks about the welfare of backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice and raccoons by educating homeowners of how to peacefully coexist with them.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first one was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals which was founded in 1886. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. In a delegates meeting held by the various animal rights organizations in 1887, there was an agreement that all the organizations should be collapsed to for the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. Due to the campaign which have been carried out by the organization, the U.S government has passed legislation that are meant to protect animals. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
